| You might be wondering what a regulator wall clock looks like. They are pendulum-driven clocks just like the Grandfather clock, only smaller and hung on the wall. This type of clock has great accuracy and contains a deadbeat escapement and a temperature-compensated pendulum to regulate the movement of the hands. The deadbeat escapement is what drives the pendulum from a gear train. This is what makes the ticking sound inside the clock. The pendulum being driven continues to swing even after the teeth of the gear locks, and with the help of the verge and the anchor, reverses the direction of the gear train. The deadbeat escapement was adopted very widely for precision and high-quality clocks. Common styles of the regulator wall clocks include the Vienna Style which goes as far back as 1880. There is also the German style, which has more elaborate designs on it than the common regulator clock. The American School House clock is also another style of the same type. The wood used in making these clocks is usually oak, maple, and cherry. Some of them have full length front doors for easy access to the clock’s gears and pendulum, while some only have front doors for the pendulum. Aside from their beauty, the clocks also play 4/4 Westminster chimes. The dials are usually ivory-colored and have either Arabic or Roman numerals and metal spade hands. Although most of the regulators have cases where to put their pendulums in, some of them have the pendulums hanging out.
